Progress is being made &#8211; the number of people dying in crashes involving at least one young driver<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/injuryfacts.nsc.org\/motor-vehicle\/road-users\/teen-drivers\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>&nbsp;dropped 5% in 2022 to&nbsp; 5,339<\/u><\/a>, according to the National Safety Council &#8211; but the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\/topics\/fatality-statistics\/detail\/teenagers#:~:text=A%20total%20of%202%2C883%20teenagers,than%20among%20females%20(60%25).\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>death rate remains much higher<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;than for drivers 20 and over.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-sbac5147\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-jaiq8149\">Safety advocates are looking to events like the now annual National Passenger Safety Week, the last week in January,&nbsp;to help show teens why they may be their own best defense against the dangers of unsafe or distracted driving. The advocates hope raising overall awareness among teens will increase the likelihood more teens will seize the opportunity from the passenger seat to help save lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-0bufv152\">The new focus on passenger empowerment grows out of longstanding evidence showing how simply having a passenger in the car with a teen driver increases the probability of a crash. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aaafoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/TeenDriverRiskAgePassengersReport.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>The risk of death per mile driven doubles with two young passengers<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and increases when new passengers are added, according to the AAA Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/672887_e8545d9d211f429d981eb158d94fb828~mv2.png\/v1\/fill\/w_305,h_305,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto\/672887_e8545d9d211f429d981eb158d94fb828~mv2.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Graphic: Hermes Falcon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-1c2n3157\">In a poll conducted by Youthcast Media Group of 134 high school students from across the country, about 77% said that they had been a passenger while the driver texted or checked their phone or social media while driving. Seventy percent said they\u2019d been in a car where other passengers were causing distractions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-wiug816178\">If those passengers speak up and help the driver focus, rather than causing distraction, advocacy groups like the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nrsf.org\/about-nrsf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>National Road Safety Foundation<\/u><\/a>, which co-sponsors the annual passenger safety week, say they\u2019ll keep everyone safer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/672887_a7bf6edd715b4755860b23dd92dd6cb7~mv2.jpg\/v1\/fill\/w_283,h_283,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto\/672887_a7bf6edd715b4755860b23dd92dd6cb7~mv2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sydney Montgomery (courtesy of Montgomery).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-jw6je20011\">Teens, who have already started joining the effort, agree. \u201cUltimately, the decision is not based upon you,\u2019\u2019 said Sydney Montgomery, a high school student from Georgia who is a member of the peer safety program, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.t-driver.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Teens in the Driver Seat.<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;\u201cIt&#8217;s a decision that&#8217;s around everyone, because if you do let that situation happen, you&#8217;re not only impacting you, but everyone that&#8217;s around you. So if you let that go through, you could risk anyone&#8217;s life that&#8217;s around you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-jstof168\">National Passenger Safety Week, now in its fourth year, runs from Jan. 20-27 and is part of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpassengersafety.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>National Passenger Safety Campaign<\/u><\/a>, a joint effort of the National Road Safety Foundation and We Save Lives, an Alexandria, Va.-based nonprofit focused on changing \u201cdangerous driving choices\u201d and saving lives by \u201cpromoting realistic solutions.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ixukf224\">One of the more passionate and vocal advocates of the burgeoning movement is We Save Lives founder Candace Lightner, who also founded Mothers Against Drunk Driving, a nonprofit widely credited with changing laws against drunk driving and saving hundreds of thousands of lives as a result.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/672887_af08a50651ac4db684e7c7e5e0f0d0a9~mv2.jpg\/v1\/fill\/w_285,h_285,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto\/672887_af08a50651ac4db684e7c7e5e0f0d0a9~mv2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Candace Lightner (courtesy of Lightner).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-2llsc171\">Once again, Lightner wants to help spark change, this time by urging youth and their parents to think more critically about their roles in disrupting unsafe driving. Parents can insist their teens become more aware of the dangers of riding in cars with people, particularly teens who engage in habits such as texting while driving, she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-f4glh174\">Lightner advises that every parent regularly ask themselves some basic questions: With whom is my child riding? Are they a licensed driver? Taking the time to pose tough questions, says the self-described \u201chellraiser,\u201d can help save lives. \u201cWould you let your kid run around with somebody who carries around an assault rifle?\u201d she asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-0wvbo23640\">But it\u2019s teens, ultimately, who may have the biggest influence on their peers, whether they are drivers or passengers. And many are taking the responsibility seriously: among teens polled in the YMG survey, 77% said they felt empowered to speak up when they felt unsafe, with more than half agreeing that \u201cit\u2019s really important and I\u2019d do it without hesitation.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-fsi9p180\">It\u2019s something that Natalie Delmont, a student at New Foundations Charter School in Philadelphia said has \u201cactually happened a lot to me when I&#8217;ve been in the car.\u2019\u2019 She\u2019s been riding with friends who she described as \u201cdistracted, listening to music and all. There&#8217;s a bunch of times where I stopped [a friend] from getting into a car accident because she wasn&#8217;t paying attention at all.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/672887_93cb923524d547a7b6a51cd69d83d171~mv2.png\/v1\/fill\/w_343,h_343,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto\/672887_93cb923524d547a7b6a51cd69d83d171~mv2.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Graphic: Angely Pena-Agramonte<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-l6sxq183\">At the same time, though, more than a quarter of teens said they wouldn\u2019t know what to say. And of the teens who said they did not feel empowered speaking up, many said it was because they were afraid of appearing lame, like a \u201cpassenger driver\u201d or disrespectful to the person driving, especially if they were not a licensed driver themselves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-jwsln186\">\u201cI don\u2019t have my permit. I don\u2019t have my license. Who am I to be talking about the way they\u2019re driving,\u201d said Natalie Spina, a junior at Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts. \u201cIt makes me feel like I don\u2019t really have a voice on these issues.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-s5hsi189\">Sixty-four percent of students said they don\u2019t believe enough emphasis is placed on the responsibility of passengers to speak up in unsafe situations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-961lt192\">Greater education about passenger empowerment could help ease some of the nervousness that some teens reported feeling about confronting distracted drivers, they said in the survey.&nbsp;That\u2019s reflected in the attitudes of teens like Sydney Montgomery and her high school classmate Olivia Coiner who\u2019ve become involved in awareness efforts such as Teens in the Driver Seat, which is an initiative of the Texas A&amp;M Transportation Institute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/672887_0d27c8cfcb33431a82ea919d20eab9cf~mv2.jpg\/v1\/fill\/w_271,h_271,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto\/672887_0d27c8cfcb33431a82ea919d20eab9cf~mv2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Olivia Coiner (courtesy of Coiner).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-wct3t197\">\u201cIf you feel uncomfortable and you see something wrong, you need to say something, because it&#8217;s way less of a big deal for you to call your mom and tell your mom, \u2018Hey, can you come pick me up?\u2019 than it would be to call your mom and say, \u2018Hey, I got in a car accident. I need you to come pick me up from the hospital,\u2019\u201d Olivia said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-sitec201\">And the responsibility to speak up about safety isn\u2019t just with peers\u2013 it can be with parents and other adult drivers, too, Olivia added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-1dv6x204\">\u201cMy dad, he works as a sales rep, so he\u2019s constantly on the phone,\u201d she says. \u201cSometimes I have to tell him, \u2018you can do this later\u2026 you don\u2019t need to do it while you\u2019re driving.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-9xayt207\">Vanity Laracuente, a student at Weaver High School in Hartford, Connecticut, has done the same with a friend\u2019s father, even though it made her uneasy. \u201c I have to tell him to stop looking on his phone while driving because \u2018you\u2019re gonna end up crashing,\u2019\u201d she said she\u2019s told him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-8q3g8213\">Much like Lightner and others, Vanity&nbsp;believes advocating for greater safety is a risk worth taking even if it\u2019s not always an easy choice in the moment. \u201cThough it may be intimidating,\u2019\u2019 she said, \u201cit is always better to do so, than not doing so because, at the end of the day, your life&#8217;s on the line.\u2019\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-7pk1a218\"><em>Shaunavahn Reid is a senior at Weaver High School in Hartford, Conn., Alani Schwertfeger is a 10th grade student at Nazareth Academy in Chicago, Cindy Tint is a 10th grader at Bellaire High School in Bellaire, Texas, and Yaneli Victoriano is a junior at Palatine High School in Palatine, Ill.
